Last week Amy and I bit the bullet and decided to go all in with smartphones and unlimited data plans -- its Verizon, so unlimited is out only and required option. Its been a week and after the initial flurry of getting accustomed to new hardware and looking for all the little fun and productive apps that we just have to have, I am now starting to settle into life with a smartphone.
Its pretty cool, to say the least. Not only do I have access to all the little time-wasting sites I frequent at work, but I am connected to the social circles that span from Facebook to Twitter to various forums, websites and plain old e-mail. Its always in my pocket and always available. Quite powerful, if you ask me.
Just the other day, I caught while shopping. I was looking at two blister-packed pens: a calligraphy pen and a fountain pen. I was perplexed as to what the difference was and anxious because I wanted to walk out of the store with one of them. I just didn't know which one was "right". My initial thought was to check the internet when I got home, but then like a message directly from God, my phone buzzed -- it was a notification that I had a direct message on my Twitter account -- and I realized that the internet was in my pocket. I performed a search and immediately had a selection of data to determine just what the difference was. And then I made my purchase.
I am sure there will be a multitude of other moments like this, that will make my $30/month data plan invaluable to me.
